Sushi Zanmai at The Gardens, Midvalley

June 12, 2008

—Backdated Post (04.06.08)— JuleenW

It all began when RuehYinn started to get so addicted with blogging. Not only that, he was hungry for guidance and advice on how to start a good blog. There’s no one to turn to, other than to his old friend, Ms. Cheryl Leong. Apparently, Cheryl has been blogging for the past 3 years or more, so I guess she can give RuehYinn a good advice on how to start !

To cut the story short, they decided to meet up after such a long time not meeting up( I don’t know how long, but it was long!!!). And being RuehYinn’s girlfriend, I was invited to tag along. Oh, other than to meet each other, RuehYinn intended to introduce me to Cheryl. We never met before.

We decided to meet at Sushi Zanmai at The Gardens @ Midvalley. Cheryl suggested that it is a good Japanese restaurant to go. RuehYinn and I have not been to this restaurant before but I have seen it somewhere. I remember I saw it somewhere. It took me a while to recall… All of the sudden, I recalled I saw it at 1 Utama when I was having an outing with my friends. That outlet was still under renovation a month ago. Look at the picture below, taken few months ago:-

Jul and friends

We were amazed with the big sushi poster that we decided to take this photo. Look at the huge sushi… hahaha, imagine having that for dinner. Yum…!! I guess God must has heard my heart desire. I was thrilled and excited when RuehYinn told me we’re going to Sushi Zanmai at the Gardens.

sushi zanmai

The day came. When we walk into the restaurant gave us the feeling that it is a posh Japanese restaurant until we saw the food conveyor in the restaurant. It is exactly the same like what you get in Genki Sushi, Sushi King and etc. I was thinking in my heart, it can’t be that posh when there is a tray conveyor in the restaurant. We were ushered by a friendly waitress to different corner which is slightly apart from the food conveyor. It was confirmed when I look into the menu. The pricing of the food is equivalent or cheaper to what you get in Genki Sushi and Sushi King. Anyway, this is Cheryl Leong:-

cheryl

It took us some time to decide what we want. Trust me, the menu is so big and extensive that you do not know what to order. We were spoiled with too many choices. However, after some discussion with Cheryl, whom have been here before, we ordered:-

1. Tenzaro Chasoba, small (by Cheryl) – RM10.80. Cold Chasoba noodle with tempura…

Chasoba

2. Kakiage Don, small (by Juleen) – RM8.80. Fried shrimp with rice…

jul's order

3. Unadon, small (by RuehYinn) – RM15.80. Eel with rice…

Unadon

Apparently, RuehYinn thinks the sauce for the rice is too little. If given more, the rice will be tastier. But he finished it anyway..hahaha..see how clean is the bowl:-

Empty Bowl

4. Sashimi salad – RM12.80. Raw fish and vegetable…

Salad

5. Inari Kani Ebikko (2 pcs) – RM7.60, Inari Ebikko – RM3.80 and Black Caviar – RM3.80. From L: Crabmeat and shrimp roe, shrimp roe and black caviar…

sushi

6. Caterpillar Roll – RM12.80. Roasted eel and omelette sushi roll topped with avocado. Sorry, we are too hungry, can’t wait for the photopgrapher. Look at the macro picture below… it will make you drool !

caterpillar

caterpillar

Overall, we enjoyed all the food. I am in the opinion that, Sushi Zanmai’s food are above average. Of course I have tasted better Japanese food but Sushi Zanmai is not in the same league as them. Looking at the pricing, I think it is only fair to compare Sushi Zanmai with other Japanese food chain like Sushi King and Genki Sushi. However, Sushi Zanmai provide more varieties.

Most of our orders are small but you can order big if your appetite is big. Don’t worry, the price for big portion is pretty reasonable too… The green tea comes in cold or hot and they are bottomless. Drink as much as your stomach can afford… haha!

No complains other than the not so suitable background music. No idea why they would play a fast beat song when we’re in a rather fine Japanese restaurant. What more it was at the same day when the government announced increase in oil price. Hehehe…

Ohhh…if you don’t intend to use the wet towel, just leave it there. Apparently each wet towel used cost RM0.20.

Tissue

Our verdict is that if you would love to eat affordable Japanese food with uncompromised standard in almost high class atmosphere you can give it a try at Sushi Zanmai. The address is as follow:-

The Gardens, Mid Valley City,
T-217 3rd Floor, Lingkaran Syed Putra,
59200 Kuala Lumpur

And not to forget to thank RuehYinn for his effort to take all the pictures…

Ho Kien Pan Mee at Subang Jaya SS19

June 10, 2008

— Backdated Post (07.06.08)— by JuleenW

This took place last Saturday morning. It was a fine, lovely morning, RuehYinn and I were yearning for something to eat. I guess it is not unusual for a couple to yearn for the same food on the same day. Haha.. So what were we yearning for? We were craving for Mee Huen Koay in Hokkien (RY is Hokkien) or Pan Mee in Cantonese ( I am Cantonese).

If you wanna know where is the best place to eat Pan Mee, other than my mum’s, it has to be at Subang Jaya SS19. The stall’s name is Ho Kien Pan Mee @ Restoran Lian Heng.

Lian Heng

When walking into Restoran Lian Heng, you’ll notice there are only a few stalls in the restaurant. If I am not mistaken you can only find the Ho Kien Pan Mee stall, one economical rice (chap fun) stall, a Chee Cheung Fun stall and a drink stall. It’s apparent that the Ho Kien Pan Mee is the source of attraction for the restaurant. Don’t be surprise if you notice almost 99% people are eating the pan mee.

The Stall

So, what’s so good about this Pan Mee?

First and foremost, it has to be the texture of the pan mee. It is thinly hand shredded and very smooth. The feeling when you put into your mouth is very unique. It is very tender and chewy. I prefer hand shredded pan mee than the machine shredded. Not only it means the cook has certain level of skills but also only with hand shredding, one is able to “pull” the dough to the right thickness…voila!

The second has to be the taste of the soup. It tastes so fresh and delicious with deep fried ikan bilis (anchovies), thinly sliced mushrooms, meat slices, minced pork and RuehYinn’s favorite cangkuk manis leaves. The blend of all the ingredients make the soup so tasty…mmMMMMmmm!

If you are chilli lover, you cannot miss their freshly made blended green chilli sauce. I love a little bit of chilli sauce on my pan mee but RuehYinn doesn’t like it. He reasoned that he wants to preserve the original taste of the pan mee. Don’t you think that is just an excuse when the fact is he cannot take spicy food…haha.

The Stall

Zoom In

In addition to all that, the price is reasonable. If I was not mistaken it used to be RM3.50 for small bowl and RM4.00 for big bowl. But that morning, the price of small bowl pan mee is RM3.80 and the big bowl is RM4.30. That is RM0.30 increased. We still can absorb the increase before getting upset and boycott the stall..hahaha.. that shows how much we love the pan mee…

Ohh, not to forget you can order sugar cane or coconut drink at the entrance of the restaurant. But RuehYinn and I still prefer hot drinks in the morning.

Milo

P.S. I have to warn you guys, however, the wait can be very very lonnnggggg. We waited for 30 minutes before getting our Pan Mee. This is the first stall that we came about that provide EQS (Electronic Queing System), MQS, we called it Manual Queing System. What happen is, after you have ordered your pan mee, you will be given a small cardboard with a number on it. Now, keep the bad habit of looking around for other people’s number. No, no.. it is not rude but it can be depressing when you see your number is so big gap compare to others. My advice is, once you order your pan mee, find a good spot, sit down, chit chat and enjoy the companion. By the way, it is RuehYinn’s advice. He said by looking around you will get high blood pressure…

Number

But I guarantee you guys that the wait is all worthwhile. So now, go start your engine and drive there now. The address is as follow:-

Ho Kien Pan Mee
Restoran Lian Heng
22, Jalan SS19/6
Subang Jaya

Time of Operation: No idea but go in the morning and I am not surprise it’s sold out in the afternoon.

The pan mee was so nice that we decided to buy back for RuehYinn’s parents and they love it so much too !

Kudos, you guys have done a good job:-

Gossips and Moca … the boutiques

June 7, 2008

Today, I feel like featuring Juleen, so I requested her to write …

Tips: It is easy to request anything from a girl especially after shopping!!

Jul blogging

—————————– —Juleen————————————————

Good afternoon people, I am Juleen, RuehYinn’s girlfriend… Since today is public holiday ( I work on Saturday), I bugged RuehYinn to bring me for shopping. We went boutique hopping in Bangsar today. Walk into few boutiques, but there two boutiques that I feel like sharing with you guys. The first one is the Moca.

moca

One thing that really capture my eyes is the design of the entrace door. It is a big blackboard but green in color actually. Such a brilliant idea. You guys really should check it out:-

Jul and Door

In my opinion, Moca is a niche boutique. The boutique has nice, unique mini-Ts that just fits, colors are very pastel-ish and girly. You will love the designs on the mini – Ts. Even though it is a boutique, the atmosphere liken a western coffee shop. I love the ambiance. Imagine, when you are looking for sizes, you don’t ask for size S, M or L. Instead you ask for Tall, Grande, and Venti. Cool huh? Most important to me, I think their pricing policy is not too bad.

If you are as interested as me, here is the name card:-

moca contact

See!! Even their name card is not on the card. It is on the serviette. How interesting?

Anyway, I saw a checked shorts. Very nice and RuehYinn loves its a lot. But too bad there aren’t any sizes for me anymore. However, no worries, I shall go back again some time to check out for the new designs..

Next, we went to the Gossips, only a few shops away from the Moca. No, no… I don’t go there to Gossips. I go there for shopping. According to them, this is what girls do best! Shopping and gossiping.. Over there, you will find anything ranging from sweet flora dresses to classy silk evening blouses. They are just nicely designed. Oh, not just that you will find women accessories, bags and shoes too. And best of all, their price are reasonable.

It was my lucky day, I found a beautiful dress for myself. So if I can get a dress there, you can too…

Jul and Bag

If you would like to visit the boutique, here is the address:-

Gossip contact

Now, after a few hours of shopping at Bangsar, we are at Starbucks, Bangsar Village II enjoying the newly introduced Dark Mocha Frappucino and a piece of Black Forest Cake. I personally, love the taste of Dark Mocha Frappucino and you guys should give a try. It is a bit pricey though…

Starbucks

I shall end my writing here. I hope you got something useful from my posting. Gotta rush back to collect RuehYinn’s car from the workshop and start baking! Handing back to RuehYinn…

Signing Off

—————————————————————————————

So what you guys think of Juleen’s post? Give your comment here… it is important as I am contemplating whether to include Juleen as the co – author for this blog. I can’t do this alone, man. You guys are just too demanding…hahaha. Anyway, putting joke aside, I was just thinking probably she can give some input on food and fashion. Let’s call it F & F ! Hmm….F & F sounds funny now!!

Anything starts with the word F always to lead something else…sigh…whatever!!

Fuel Saving Tips (Part II)

June 7, 2008

Eventually Fuel Saving Tips (Part II) has arrived. I know there has been a lot of request asking me to finish the Fuel Saving Tips’ series. So here you go my friends and my FM, Mr. TC. I hope you guys will enjoy reading. However, let me pre – warn you guys that, I never guarantee this tips to be logical…

Anyway, my one and only tip is to… migrate to Venezuela. If you do not know yet, gasoline in Venezuela is the cheapest in the world – 1/15 the price of a litre of bottled water, and 1/25 the price of a litre of milk.

Gas Price

So what’s the big deal RuehYinn? Let me show what’s the big deal…

Firstly,

Price of gasoline in Venezuela = RM0.16/liter

Price of gasoline in Malaysia = RM2.70/liter

Big Deal No 1: You’re paying whopping 16.875 times more than people in Venezuela !

Secondly, assuming you are driving a Proton Waja (fuel consumption of 9.0 km/liter), every RM100…

You can travel 333.33 km in Malaysia

You can travel 5625 km in Venezuela

Big Deal No 2: RM100 is only able to sustain your fuel consumption for 4 days ( approx. 1/2 week) in Malaysia but enough for you to drive in Venezuela for 4 months before the next refueling.

Don’t ask me about the road tax, car price and etc in Venezuela. I have no clue… But isn’t the gasoline price in Venezuela already very appealing for those that are so upset about the recent gas price increase?

—————————————————————————————

Alright, to add in some sweetener to my tips, allow me to convince you further why you should move to Venezuela…

1. Venezuela is a beautiful country. There are the snowcapped peaks of the Andes in the west; steamy Amazonian jungles in the south; the hauntingly beautiful Gran Sabana plateau, with its strange flat-topped mountains, in the east; and miles of white-sand beaches fringed with coconut palms on the Caribbean coast.

Venezuela

Originally uploaded by josemazcona

You have snow mountain, big jungles, beautiful beach and landscape, what else to complain?

2. This is more appealing toward the guys. Believe it or not, Venezuela is one of the countries that produce the highest number of prettiest women in the world. No, I am not talking about dumb blonde or dumb pretty. I am talking about women that are not only attractive but intelligent also. Look at the statistic below:-

As of 2007, best performing countries for MISS WORLD title are:-

Ms World

As of 2007, best performing countries for MISS UNIVERSE title are:-

Ms. Universer

These table are taken from Wikipedia, so I assumed it is pretty reliable. But guys, please brush up your Spanish before approaching the beautiful Venezuelan ladies. Else, don’t come back empty handed to Malaysia and bash me up for convincing you guys.

3. And also my intuition tells me, you might be the few Malaysian that migrates over to Venezuela. So, in order to make a living, you could just open an authentic Malaysian buffet restaurant. Who knows? … because your product is a niche, you became the largest Malaysian buffet restaurant chain in Venezuela. You will be freaking RICH …$$$$$ ! Malaysia Boleh… show them our spirit and make us proud !

So do you have enough good reasons to migrate now?

What about you RuehYinn?

As for me, I have decided to stay in Malaysia. No doubt, recent gasoline price hike is hard to swallow but I believe the decision is inevitable. I would rather take a short term pain than having illusion that we’re somehow insulated by the rising price of crude oil. Let’s just hope that our government ( I pray really hard, alright?) will use the money coming from the saving on the subsidy to improve the nation. Ohh… I forgot to tell you, over subsidizing gasoline in Venezuela has caused the country to have too many cars; i.e. bad traffic congestion and government lack of funding to improve the country’s infrastructure…

NOW YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT !!!!!

The Day When All Malaysian Rush to Gas Stations…

June 4, 2008

Today is an exciting day for me. I shall remembered it as the The Day When All Malaysian Rush to Gas Stations. When I say ALL, I mean ALL. It all began at ….

At 5.20pm:

BREAKING NEWS: Petrol will be RM2.70 a litre at midnight tonight.

The new price of premium leaded petrol (ULG 97) is RM2.70 per litre beginning midnight tonight, it was announced a moment ago. The price for ULG 92 petrol per litre went up by 74 sen to RM2.62. Diesel will go up by RM1 per litre to RM2.58. The 78 sen hike or 40 per cent increase for the ULG 97 petrol is still below the antiticpated RM4 per litre price projected earlier and among the cheapest in Asia. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at a news conference. (NSTP, June 4 2008 )

At 6.30pm (As I was walking to LRT Station)

Congestion at KL

Normally, this road is only this congested when it is raining. Now look at the sky. It’s sunny. Next look at the pathway. It’s dry. Overall, it was a good evening.

Still don’t believe it is a good sunny evening? Alright, can you see that the two ladies sitting and gossiping (I assumed) by the side of the road?? Alright now you believe it was a good evening, but why the heck the road is so congested? It was so bad that the cars are virtually not moving at all. Not even moving from bumper to bumper.

Somehow, my 6th sense (as if I have, ha ha), told me something was wrong. And it was confirmed when I saw the condition in KLCC’s parking:-

Parking at KLCC

The parking was relatively empty compared to the normal day. A lot of empty parking slots indicates many people has left. But why?

From 6.45pm – 9.45pm

Between this period of time, I was in LRT then KTM before I reached the Gardens @ Midvalley after all the squeezing in the train. I was at the Gardens to have dinner with Juleen and Cheryl Leong at Sushi Zanmai. I will be blogging about this restaurant and the food soon. This shall be my first attempt to become a food critic, so stay tune. Anyway, over the dinner more than half of the topics we talked about has something to do with gasoline. So much to talk about that I am convinced, we can write a research thesis about it. The title for the thesis will be “In Depth Analysis and Impact of High Oil Price in Malaysia“. Ha ha ha…

The girls went for a short shopping right after dinner. And…

At 9.55pm , when we were driving back home,

Traffic Congestion

We realized we chose the wrong route home. Imagine, this was the condition in Bangsar at 9.55pm on the weekday. Absolutely not normal, right? The traffic flow was so slow that instantly I felt so sleepy in the car. Imagine, so slow that even Mr. Tortoise would travel faster than our car. As we drove a little further, we realized that the congestion was caused by cars queuing up to get into the gas station:-

Petrol Station Rush

We just find it amusing to see the scenario again and again at different gas stations. I guess that’s what kept us calm and steady in the car despite the traffic condition. Nope, we are not part of them because Juleen had already filled up her tank before 5pm… hehe…

1. Bangsar again…

Rush to Gas Station

2. At Section 17…

Rushing to Gas Station

3. Somewhere at Petaling Jaya

Rush to Gas Station

In total, our journey from Midvalley to Bandar Utama took us one and half hour which normally take us mere 20 minutes.

At the end of the day, I am happy because of I am part of this historical moment in Malaysia.

What about my view on the fuel price increase?

To be frank, my heart was crushed and it was like a nightmare came true to me when the government announced the fuel price increase. Forty one percent (41%) increase in fuel is too much to bear, really. I pump on average RM300 a month and now I have to fork out extra RM120 per month for the same amount of fuel. That is a lot of money guys! Anyway, I guess instead of being adamant over the issues, might as well I look at the issues through the kids’ eye, assuming everything will be okay:-

Kid Happy

P/S: Now I am more inspired to write the Part II of Fuel Saving Tips…but I am very sleepy… yawn…ZzzZZzzzzz!

Fuel Saving Tips (Part II) but …

June 4, 2008

I was about to write about my Fuel Saving Tips Part (II) until I saw the The Star’s today newspaper headline. The headline for June 3, 2008 is “NEW FUEL SUBSIDY” and “Govt to announce scheme tomorrow, say Pak Lah“.

Newspaper

I stopped for a while, deciding whether I should continue writing or not. I decided not to, simply because I wanna see what kind of new subsidy scheme the government is going implement and most importantly what are the rakyats’ response after the long awaited announcement. Who knows the announcement might cause me to re-consider my tips. However, I don’t think that is likely. In fact I think you guys will love my tips so much, that you all might just embrace my idea without any second thought.

So just stay tune for the Part II on Fuel Saving Tips.

Before I end this post. I just wanna let you guys know that, I am feeling touched and encouraged by you guys. You guys?…yes you guys the readers. You all are just superb. Look below:-

Record Stats

My blog has been in new record setting spree since May 31. As of midnight, I already have 94 views on my blog. To be frank, I am very happy each time I see record high hit but at the same time I am not convince that I will repeat the feat. But with you guys’ support, I have been hitting record high for the past 4 days.

Even I have to die now, I think I will die as a happy man and end up as a happy ghost…hahaha!

Anyway, from the “deepest” bottom of my heart, I wanna say thank you guys for your support. It does encourage me to continue writing. I have personal target actually, that is, if I continue writing for the next 6 months and consistently getting 250 hits everyday, I shall consider getting myself a domain and host it. It would be great if I can do that in the next 6 months. Now you know my target, so why still sitting around? Go spread the news about my blog….hahahaha.

If I have the opportunity I want my blog to be as “powderful” as kennysia’s and xiaxue’s blog. Imagine getting 17,000 – 20,000 hits a day. Wahhhhh……

Now leave me alone to IMAGINE !!…Shoooh…

Moral of this post:-

If you can imagine it, then you can have it!

Latest Update: Total hit for June 3 is 100.
